NVOS artist Patricia "Pete" Sebbelov describes her artwork as "a whimsical, colorful, evocative visual journey." She wants to leave viewers with something to think about, using a playful abstract style. As she says, "I have something to say, and my art is my voice."
Pete motivates herself by developing an idea and creating at least ten pieces in each series – sometimes the idea is more literal; sometimes more abstract. She comments that "the not-knowing what's next – but challenging myself to push the concept further – is exciting."
A self-taught artist, Pete works relentlessly at exploring her craft and improving her mixed media techniques. Her paintings have an acrylic base; her monotypes are created with oil-based ink. She also enjoys layering colors by adding pastels, pencils, watercolors, and inks.
Pete finds herself inspired most especially by the vulnerability of being "in the moment." The Napa Valley provides additional inspiration, with its "persistently changing landscape, exquisitely transforming from green to golden to green again." Her artistic inspirations are Picasso, Chagall, Miro, Kandinsky, and Diebenkorn.
Pete describes her studio as her "woman cave.". She generally has several projects in process at any given time, and describes herself as "a very messy artist." You can see the wonderful messiness of creativity for yourself, and meet her, at Studio # 13, 3106 Kingston Avenue, in Napa, California.
NVOS artist Karen Lynn Ingalls writes for this blog and our Facebook page (seen it yet?) and paints, paints, paints. You can see her artwork during Open Studios at Studio #48, with Sequoia Buck, west of Calistoga, and online at www.KarenLynnIngalls.com.
