By NVOS artist Davina Rubin
NVOS Artist Judy Donovan sometimes works from dream images, but most often she works from memory of an arresting scene, usually involving rock formations, hillsides or mountains.
She is inspired by not only by her subjects - landscape and organic shapes, and by the quality of light and color - but also by the passion of the action in the process of painting itself. Music also inspires, either listening to it while painting, or “hearing” music in response to looking at paintings.
Judy considers a unique aspect of her art to be the good fortune she has had in her mentors. “I have had three major mentors in my painting life - extraordinary human beings as well as artists. Their presence in my life has been critical to keeping my painting life alive and thriving in the midst of a very demanding teaching career.
Judy has won several awards, among them the Priscilla Lundgren Memorial Purchase Award, and a Certificate of Merit, 2013 at GRO Gallery (Ruth Braunstein was the juror).
Her studio for Open Studios 2013, Studio #7, is in the Tannery Building next to the Napa River. You'll find it at 101 South Coombs Street V24, in Napa, California.
Artist, writer and actress Davina Rubin uses acrylics and mixed media to create abstract works on both canvas and paper. She paints in her small loft in Napa, and writes a philosophic blog atwww.davinarubin.com.
