President of Napa Unified School District Board Announces Resignation

Members will plan for replacement.

News submitted from the Napa Valley Unified School District:

Jacqueline Chilton, president of the NVUSD Board of Trustees, resigned today in a letter to the Board and to County Superintendent of Education Barbara Nemko, citing a new career opportunity outside the Bay Area.

“It’s a bittersweet moment, because I am truly grateful to have had the opportunity to serve students and families in the District and will miss seeing our valuable work continue,” Chilton said. “But I am confident that this Board is on a thoughtful, forward-thinking track that benefits all of our students and staff.”

Chilton’s resignation is effective April 8. At their next meeting, on April 9, the remaining Board members will select a new president, who will fill the role until December 2016.

According to District General Counsel Sally Jensen-Dutcher, the remaining Board members have 60 days to decide whether to appoint a replacement member or call for a special election to complete Chilton’s term. Regardless of which option they choose, the new member would be required to run in the November 2016 general election.

Chilton became president of the seven-member elected Board in December 2014. She was first elected to the Board in November 2010, running at large to represent Trustee Area 1, which includes the Yountville, Mt. George, Vichy and Capell/Wooden valleys attendance areas. She was re-elected without opposition in November 2014.

“Jacqueline Chilton has been a valuable team member, and an integral part of the Board that has helped us emerge from the economic downturn,” said Superintendent Dr. Patrick Sweeney. “She has been a champion of achievement for all students, from those who need extra help to advanced learners. I am grateful for her service and we all wish Jacqueline and her family the very best.”
