Smoke May Be Visible In North Bay Communities Amid Prescribed Burn

Heavy smoke from a prescribed burn in eastern Sonoma County may be visible Saturday in Napa and Sonoma counties, authorities said.

BAY AREA, CA — Heavy smoke from a prescribed burn in eastern Sonoma County may be visible Saturday in Napa and Sonoma counties, according to emergency management officials.

The prescribed burn is located in the Pepperwood Preserve, located northeast of Santa Rosa and west of Calistoga.

Officials from the Napa County Office of Emergency Services said residents in Napa and Sonoma counties would likely see smoke Saturday afternoon from the prescribed burn, which is being managed by the Cal Fire Sonoma-Lake-Napa Unit in partnership with the Pepperwood Preserve.

The prescribed burn began Thursday.

The project size is approximately 105 acres and is administered to promote healthy forests and reduce wildfire risk on a strategic fire control ridge separating Franz Valley and the Mark West Springs area.

Cal Fire officials said prescribed burns like this are carefully planned and must meet strict criteria for ecological benefit, weather parameters, smoke management and fire safety guidelines.
