So Who Are Newly Elected American Canyon City Councilmembers?

NAPA COUNTY, CA – With 20,000 ballots still uncounted countywide, the American Canyon City Council contest is still too close to call, Napa County Registrar of Voters John Tuteur said.

Councilman Kenneth Leary leads Councilwoman Joan Bennett for the second seat by 23 votes, according to the unofficial post-election night interim report released Wednesday.

Attorney and business owner Mariam Aboudamous leads the race with 1,993 votes. Leary has 1,867 and Bennett has 1,844 votes. Sheriff's Deputy Tony Heuschel trails with 1,704 votes, according to the updated results.

Wednesday's results include 8,000 vote-by-mail ballots received between Nov. 4 and Nov. 7.

"The election division hopes to have a second interim report shortly after Thanksgiving," Tuteur said.

Along with the 20,000 uncounted ballots, the county elections office also has to review 774 provisional ballots, duplicate approximately 1,500 ballots that could not be read by the optical scanners and conduct a
manual tally of approximately 2,000 ballots to confirm the accuracy of the ballot tabulation machines, Tuteur said.

The public is invited to observe the process of certifying the election results, including a random draw of the manual tally precincts, at 9 a.m. on Nov. 28.

Final certification of the election must be completed by Dec. 9, Tuteur said.
