Soscol Junction Interchange Project No Longer Delayed By Birds

Construction will start on Caltrans' State Route 29/221 Soscol Junction Interchange Project after fledgling birds prompted a weeklong delay.

The three-year project will replace the signalized intersection of SR-12/29, SR-221 and Soscol Ferry Road with an interchange composed of an overpass and two roundabouts.

NAPA COUNTY, CA — Caltrans will resume the start of construction on the Soscol Junction Interchange Project in southern Napa County on Monday, July 25.

The project was supposed to start July 18 but was delayed by a week due to birds nesting and fledgling in the area. The birds are no longer there, Caltrans said Friday.

Starting Monday, the speed limit will be reduced by 10 mph within the project limits. Once work begins, motorists are encouraged to slow down as crews will be working during the day from 7 a.m. until 3:30 p.m.

Three-Year Project

The three-year project will replace the signalized intersection of State Route 12/29, State Route 221 and Soscol Ferry Road with an interchange composed of an overpass and two roundabouts, a configuration that will add fluidity to traffic flow, reduce congestion and enhance bicycle and pedestrian connectivity.

Caltrans crews will landscape the area with local plants, including oaks whose canopies will visually screen the interchange from distant onlookers.

Caltrans will build 1,200 feet of Class I bicycle and pedestrian paths as part of the project. Eventually, the bicycle/pedestrian lanes will connect to the Vine Trail, a 47-mile multi-use path that will stretch from Calistoga to the ferry in Vallejo.
