Storm Ready for Conference Play

3-2 defeat over larger Chabot College significant.

The new women’s Storm soccer team put another notch in their preseason belt on Tuesday, Sept. 20, by defeating Chabot College in a gritty match on Storm Field.

Coach Brad Williams is excited about the team’s progress.

"Deborah Creiglow () scored her first-ever goal for Napa Valley College two minutes into the game. A fantastic long pass from Danni Hill () provided her the shot and she played it well," he said.

According to Williams, "Our training sessions have been focused on our attack and the girls really have shown how their work has paid off.

"Sarah Zuniga (Napa High) tallied her third goal of the season just five minutes later off a cross from Natasha Wallace.

"Jasmin Angel scored her second goal of the season off of a perfect cross from Mary Birdsall ()," he continued.

Williams gave the larger, Coast Conference member, Chabot College, its due.

"Deandre Britton caused us some problems for our defense scoring both of Chabot’s goals, but we did enough to keep the result in our favor and claim another home win," he said.

The work for the Storm isn’t over, however.

"We need to clean up some of our defense mechanics and continue to work on finishing the chances we create in front of the goal," Williams said.

"We have a week to prepare for Yuba and we will be ready to compete well in the second stage of our season."

The first half finished with the Storm dominating the offensive attack.

The second half began with Chabot seeming to redefine their offensive cohesiveness and pushed the Storm down the field more consistently.

Chabot scored a second goal about one third the way through the second half. The remaining half was a constant exchange of attacks on either goal.

Chabot got two goals off that narrowly missed scoring and the Storm got off at least one. As time ran out, the final score tallied in at 3-2, Storm, giving the new team a 3-3-1 preseason record.

Conference play begins Tuesday, Sept. 27, at 2 p.m. The Storm will host Yuba College. The men’s Storm soccer team will host Yuba immediately following the women’s game.
