Vallejo Man Hospitalized After SUV Crash On Hwy 29

The man reportedly dozed off behind wheel of Suburban and rear-ended a Yukon, driven by Napa woman with child onboard and stopped at light.

NAPA COUNTY, CA – A Vallejo man suffered major injuries when two SUVs collided on southbound state Highway 29 in American Canyon this morning, police said.

The 55-year-old Vallejo man reportedly fell asleep while driving a Chevrolet Suburban on Highway 29 around 8 a.m. and rear-ended a GMC Yukon that was stopped at a red light at Napa Junction Road in a left turn lane on Highway 29, American Canyon police Chief Oscar Ortiz said.

A female passenger in the Suburban, who was not injured, told officers that the driver "fell asleep at the wheel and drifted to the left," police said.

The Vallejo man was flown by helicopter, which landed on Highway 29 for the rescue, to Queen of the Valley Medical Center, Ortiz said.

A Napa woman, 30, driving the Yukon complained of pain and was taken by ambulance to Queen of the Valley Medical Center. A young child, 5, who was properly restrained in the Yukon's car seat was not injured, Ortiz said.

The vehicles blocked the intersection of Highway 29 and Napa Junction Road causing significant commute delays until around 9:15 a.m.

The American Canyon police added as a reminder to the public: "Child-safety seats work! Great job by this mom on having a properly installed safety seat for her child. Installs and Inspections are available at ACPD by appointment, 707-551-0600."
