Want To Spend $146.5 Million? 2 Seats Open American Canyon City Council

NAPA VALLEY, CA — American Canyon residents interested in shaping the city's future have until Aug. 7 to begin the process of running for one of two City Council seats on the November ballot.

The election will determine who fills the two council seats on the November ballot.

In a community newsletter, Mayor Pierre Washington said residents should consider public service, calling a city council seat one of the most direct ways to influence decisions affecting public safety, parks, roads, housing, economic development, and overall quality of life.

"Serving on the City Council is one of the most meaningful ways to help shape our city's future," Washington wrote.

To help prospective candidates understand the role, the city has produced two informational videos.

The first, "A Day in the Life of a Councilmember," provides a behind-the-scenes look at the time commitment, responsibilities, and day-to-day work of serving on the council.

The second, "Thinking About Running for City Council?" explains candidate eligibility requirements, important filing deadlines, and what residents can expect throughout the election process.

The nomination period is now open. Prospective candidates must pull nomination papers by Aug. 7.

Washington said he hopes the videos will encourage more residents to learn about local government and consider seeking office.

"I look forward to seeing the next generation of community leaders step forward to help write the next chapter of our city's story," he wrote.

In addition to the current city budget, candidates elected to the City Council will likely help oversee income from a new sales tax if voters approve the proposed 1-cent increase in November.

Measure P is a proposed 1-cent local sales tax that American Canyon voters will decide on in the Nov. 3 election. If approved, the city's sales tax rate would increase from 7.75% to 8.75%. City officials estimate the measure would generate about $3.7 million each year to help pay for general city services and other community priorities.
