When Two Worlds Collide

Napa Valley's First Peoples and the California Gold Rush

The Napa County Library will host Napa Valley Museum on Wednesday, January 20 at 7pm (Napa Main Library). Napa Valley Museum Director of Education, Pat Alexander, and Museum Education Docent and Historian, April Farnham, will examine the economic and social toll of the California Gold Rush from two distinct perspectives: California’s Native People and the Gold Rush Argonauts.

Did you know that the Gold Rush helped Napa become a city in the 1850s? It all began on the banks of the American river on January 24, 1848 when James Marshall first discovered a shiny golden nugget. By 1849 the land of western Sierra Mountains and Central Valley, sacred home to the Maidu, Miwok, Wintun, and other Native Peoples, was overrun by thousands of 49’ers looking for fortune and opportunity.

This event is free and open to the public. For more information, visit www.napalibrary.org or email Breanna Feliciano at Breanna.Feliciano@CountyofNapa.org.
