Young Bird Watchers Flock to Napa for the 4th Annual CBC 4 Kids
Annual Christmas Bird Count for Kids to be Held in Napa on December 16, 2017. Free public event, requires registration on Eventbrite.
Did you know that 313 different species of birds have been recorded by local birders in Napa? These “Citizen Scientists” are part of a growing national movement. Websites such as eBird.org depend on everyday people to observe and record bird sightings and have helped scientists gather more complete information about bird populations and migration patterns. Napa-Solano Audubon, the Napa County Library, and Connolly Ranch are hoping to propel youngsters to become the next generation of bird lovers and citizen scientists, and ensure the survival of our graceful feathered friends for the next century and beyond. On December 16th, 2017, NSAS volunteers and fledgling birders will disperse around parks in Napa to conduct the annual Christmas Bird Count for Kids, counting every bird in their assigned areas for 90 minutes of birding bliss.
The participants will meet at the Napa County Library, 580 Coombs St., at 8:30 AM for a Binocular Bootcamp, and a short orientation session. Then, with bird checklists in hand, they will take off to their locations. After birding, they will return to the Library to report their results and submit them for posting on eBird, a citizen-based bird observation network operated by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology.
At the 2016 Napa CBC 4 Kids, there were a grand total of 63 different species of birds and 1026 total individuals spotted at 5 different parks. This year’s locations will include Kennedy Park, Trancas Crossing Park, Oxbow Preserve, and Connolly Ranch.
