1 Dead, 1 Hurt In Newark Police Shooting

No police officers or bystanders were injured in the shooting on Thursday involving carjacking suspects.

NEWARK, CA — One suspect is dead and a second is hospitalized following an officer involved shooting in Newark Thursday afternoon. No officers or bystanders were injured.

According to Newark Police, community safety cameras alerted the department to a carjacking suspect vehicle that entered Newark on Mowry Avenue.

The vehicle was located in the 39000 block of Cedar Boulevard.

Officers from the Southern Alameda County Major Crimes Task Force, the Fremont Police Department as well as the Newark Police Department converged and stopped the vehicle.

Further details about the shooting have not been released.

"Officers immediately rendered aid and summoned emergency medical personnel, but the suspect did not survive," police said in a message to the community. "A second suspect was transported to a local area hospital with non-life threatening injuries. A weapon was recovered on scene."

Newark Police Department Detectives are investigating the case with the assistance of the Fremont Police Department.

In addition, independent investigations are being conducted by the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office and the Newark Police Department’s Professional Standards and Training Unit.
