BLOG: Tidepools at the Fitzgerald Marine Reserve

The adventures and tips of a Newark resident and mom. In this blog post, learn how the tidepools at Fiztgerald Marine Reserve are a great adventure for all ages.

We recently visited the Fitzgerald Marine Reserve in Moss Beach, CA.  The reserve is located  just a few miles north of Half Moon Bay on Highway 1.

This is definitely one of the best places I have found to view tidepools during low tide.  When we arrived, the tide had already begun to roll in, but there was still plenty to see.

The main items to find are Sea Anemone, Sea Slugs, Chiton, Sea Stars and Sea Lions. We were also lucky enough to find a few large crabs, clams and hermit crabs.

When visting the reserve I have a few recommendations:

  • Wear non-slip shoes or water shoes
  • Bring a hat and sunglasses
  • Use sunscreen
  • Don't forget your camera
  • Do the left side of the tidepools first, they are the best!
  • Best viewing is during the low/low tide

During our visit we also walked along the trails of the reserve.  They are breathtaking!  On the trails, there are great opportunities for photos and a little hide-and-go-seek.

We finished off the day with a little lunch on Main Street in Half Moon Bay.  While wondering along Main Street we stumbled upon Moonside Bakery and Cafe.  What a find!  This is where all of the locals get their goodies.  They have everything! You can check out their website at www.moonsidebakery.com
