Newark Girls Softball League kicks off Breast Cancer Awareness Week.

Breast Cancer Awareness Week is in October, but because the league plays in the Spring, and not in the fall, this year NGSL will play with the pink balls, and fund-raise the entire week of April 29th

Pink Softballs To Promote Breast Cancer Awareness

Playing with a pink softball is unusual for girls softball. It is traditional that during the regular fastpitch season softball teams play with a neon yellow ball.

For one week of the season the Newark Girls Softball League, also known as NGSL, play with pink balls to bring awareness to breast cancer, and help fund-raise for this worthy cause.

Last year, NGSL raised over $235.00 through a raffle for the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. More importantly the league helped bring awareness to the 200 plus girls who play in the league.

Liz Campusano, the leagues VP, said “studies show this is a disease, that if not stopped, could be contracted by 25 of our girls at the current rates. That is one in 8 females. It will impact just about every one of them through friends and family at some point. Awareness is key."

Breast Cancer Awareness Week is in October, but because the league plays in the Spring, and not in the fall, this year NGSL will play with the pink balls, and fund-raise the entire week of April 29th.

A raffle with gifts, donated by local businesses and families will raise money for research to find a cure. Even the pink softballs were donated by one of NGSL’s board members. Everyone is invited to watch NGSL’s games at Snow Elementary, 6580 Mirabeau in Newark.

Money can also be donated by sending a check to NGSL, for the cause, at PO Box 552, Newark, CA 94560. Liz Campusano says “Every penny we collect goes to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. Our league is built for the well being of the girls in the Tri-City area and their well being is important to us even after their playing days are done".
