Newark Library Participates in Banned Books Week

Next week (9/24- 10/01) is Banned Books Week, in which we annually celebrate the First Amendment and the freedom to read.

Books are often challenged due to controversial issues, subject matter, or language. Books that are banned are actively removed from school curriculum and public/school libraries.

On Thursday the 29th we will be showing the 1984 film Footloose starring Kevin Bacon at 6:30 p.m. in the Meeting Room. The movie is about a city boy who moves to a small town, only to learn that dancing has been outlawed. There is no charge, just come on in if you feel like watching a movie and beating the heat! 

Starting on Tuesday, our library staff is planning on participating in a virtual read-out, where we read sections from some of our personal favorite banned books. Find the Newark Library on Facebook if you want to check out the videos!
