Relay for Life is a 24-hour fundraiser in which teams of people camp out and take turns walking around a track. On Saturday, June 6, 2026, Newark Symphonic Winds (NSW), under the superb direction of Mr. Richard Wong, will present our Free Summer Concert.
Date: Saturday, June 6, 2026
Time: 7:00 PM
Location: Newark Memorial High School Theatre, 39375 Cedar Blvd., Newark, CA 94560We’ll begin this evening with “Cotton Ferry Expedition” by Ralph Ford when you’ll musically experience life along the great Mississippi. Next will be a George Gershwin composition, “An American in Paris,” that includes all the tunes with which you are so familiar. "The Rakes of Mallow from the Irish Suite" follows. It's a composition from one of your favorites, Leroy Anderson, the composer of "Sleigh Ride." We'll end the first half by inviting you to close your eyes and imagine being a kid again by listening to "A Childhood Remembered" by Rossano Galante.
After intermission, we’ll begin our second half featuring the wonderful music of the Pleasantones Clarinet Quartet. The quartet is comprised of Tony Altwies, Sydney Moura, Brenda Nixon, and Kathy Vork. They’ll perform three tunes: "Don't Get Around Much Anymore," "Java Jive," and for fun, "Three Blind Mice."
The symphony will then return to the stage and begin the second half of our performance with the "Carmen Suite" by Gorges Bizet arranged by Jack Bullock. Next will be a very haunting composition by John Barnes Chance, "Incantation and Dance." Hans Zimmer is a very well-known Oscar-winning composer of movie scores. This next composition, "At the Movies with Hans Zimmer," includes selections from "Man of Steel," "Inception," and "The Dark Knight Rises." We'll end this evening with a tribute to America by performing "An American Spectacular," arranged by Chris Sharp. See how many of the many tunes included you can recognize.
We are once again extremely fortunate to have this performance sponsored by the Fremont Bank Foundation. As always, the concert is free of charge, and no tickets are necessary. Simply come and enjoy the evening with all of your favorite local musicians – and – be certain to bring your family and friends. 
As a reminder, we often have a full house at our performances; therefore, please plan on arriving a bit earlier than 7:00 PM to get the seating you prefer.
