On Saturday, May 24, 2025, the Newark Symphonic Winds (NSW), under the superb direction of Mr. Richard Wong, will present our Free Summer Concert.

Date: Saturday, May 24, 2025

Time: 7:00 PM

Location: Newark Memorial High School Theatre, 39375 Cedar Blvd., Newark, CA 94560

We’ll begin this evening with a medley, “Swingin’ on the Moon,” arranged by Michael Kamuf. You’ll certainly recognize “Blue Moon,” “Moonlight Serenade,” and “How High the Moon.” Next will be an Aaron Copland composition, “Letter From Home.” Following will be “Juba Dance” from Florence Price’s “Symphony No. 1 in E Minor.” Next is the very recognizable lovely and haunting composition, “Oblivion,” by Astor Piazzolla. What’s a concert without a march or two? In honor of our Coast Guard, we’ll perform Mark Ashley’s “Coast Guard Day March.” We’ll end the first half with another medley of your favorite TV tunes in “Salute to Television,” arranged by Carl Strommen.

After intermission, we’ll begin our second half featuring the wonderful music of the Newark Saxophone Quartet – Plus One. The quartet is comprised of Peter Greff on baritone saxophone, Steve Leitner on tenor, Andy Ehling on alto, and Jim Carter on soprano. Their Plus One is Glenn Wiegand on percussion. They’ll perform “Wipeout”, “Does Anybody Really Know What Time it Is,” “You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feeling,” and “Make Me Smile.”

The symphony will then return to the stage and begin the second half of our performance with another medley, “Alan Silvestri: A Night at the Movies,” arranged by Michael Brown. Next will be a fun, narrated composition by Camille Saint-Saëns, “Carnival of the Animals.” We’ll then transport you to the musical stage by performing pieces from the much-loved musical “Hamilton” in the “Suite from Hamilton,” by Lin-Manuel Miranda. We’ll end this evening’s performance by getting you in marching form with “America Exultant” by Henry Fillmore.

We are once again extremely fortunate to have this performance sponsored by the Fremont Bank Foundation. As always, the concert is free of charge, and no tickets are necessary. Simply come and enjoy the evening with all of your local musicians - and – be certain to bring your entire family and all your friends.

As a reminder, we often have a full house at our performances; therefore, please plan on arriving a bit earlier than 7:00 PM to get the seating you prefer.

You can find more information about our performances on our web site (https://newarksymphonic.org). There you will find a map that illustrates the location of Newark Memorial High School, where you can conveniently park, and the location of the theatre. Simply click on the link (or copy and paste it into your browser). Then click on "Performances." Finally, scroll down and click on the annotated map.

All our best wishes and hope to see all of you Saturday evening May 24, 2025, at our Free Summer Concert.
