Newark Symphonic Winds - Free Spring Concert

Date: Saturday, March 21, 2026

Time: 7:00 PM

Location: Newark Memorial High School Theatre, 39375 Cedar Blvd., Newark, CA 94560

The Newark Symphonic Winds (NSW), under the superb direction of Mr. Richard Wong, will present our Free Spring Concert.

We’ll begin this evening with a medley of tunes from "Pixar Movie Magic," arranged by Michael Brown. You'll certainly remember these tunes. We’ll next perform a very familiar and lively piece by Aaron Copland, “Hoe Down,” from the 1942 ballet "Rodeo." A lovely composition, "Air for Band," by Frank Erickson will be next. We’ll follow that with a march "Pas Redoublé," by Camille Saint-Saëns. We’ll end the first half with a stunningly beautiful piece by Naoya Wada entitled "Hope Glowing in the Sky," something we all need these days. We certainly hope this last melody will encourage you to try some of our luscious intermission treats!

After intermission we are proud to present the music of Montecito Brass. Their musicians include Mike Peterson and Alan Osofsky on trumpet, Blossom Santiago on horn, Randall Chase on trombone, and Raul Dingle on tuba. They will perform two tunes: "The Girl from Ipanema," arranged by Jayan Nandagopan and movements 1, 2, and 4 from "French Quarter Snapshots," by Zack Smith.

Our second half begins with "In the Hall of the Mountain King." This piece of orchestral music was composed by Edvard Grieg for the 1876 play "Peer Gynt," by Henrik Ibsen. Next will be "Asturias" from the "Suite Española," by Issac Albéniz. Then, when a composer has two playful dogs like Randall Standridge had, you come up with a zany tune such as our next tune, "That Old Hound Dog Rag," which is just as much fun to play as it is to listen to. Our final piece of the evening is a medley of tunes from one of the most beloved American composers of all time, Duke Ellington. Sit back and enjoy tunes made famous by the Duke and his band including "Take the A Train," "Don’t Get Around Much Anymore," the harmonically rich ballad, "Mood Indigo" and "Caravan."

We are once again extremely fortunate to have this performance sponsored by the Fremont Bank Foundation. As always, the concert is free of charge, and no tickets are necessary. Simply come and enjoy the evening with us - and be certain to bring all your friends. You might want to plan on arriving somewhat early for this performance to get the seats you prefer.

You can find more information about this and future performances on our web site: https://newarksymphonic.org

Once you are there, under ‘Performances’ you will find a map:
