Caltrans: Expect Delays on I-880/92 Interchange for Weekend Construction

Workers will close the connector ramps from southbound I-880 to eastbound SR-92 and from westbound SR-92 back to southbound I-880 starting Friday.

Caltrans says Bay Area drivers should expect delays and detours on Interstate 880 in Hayward this weekend as Caltrans crews shut down parts of the freeway to work on reconstructing the interchange at State Route 92.

On its website, Caltrans said workers will close the connector ramps from southbound I-880 to eastbound SR-92 and from westbound SR-92 back to southbound I-880 starting Friday at 8 p.m.

Caltrans expects construction work to finish by Monday at 5 a.m.

According to the Caltrans website, contractors will realign the southbound ramps and continue building the new ramp connecting westbound SR-92 to southbound I-880.

The construction work is part of the SR-92/I-880 Interchange Reconstruction Project. Caltrans workers are changing the cloverleaf design of the intersection, which dates back to the 1950s, to a new design that is expected to handle a 56 percent jump in traffic by 2025.

Caltrans Detours for Feb. 4 – Feb. 7 (from www.i880corridor.com)

  • Southbound I-880 traffic is advised to exit at the Tennyson Road off-ramp, then re-enter the freeway on the northbound Tennyson Road loop.  Motorists familiar with the area may choose alternate routes, such as A Street or Winton Avenue, to avoid the closure. Trucks should use the official detour to Tennyson Road, due to traffic and weight restrictions.
  • Westbound SR-92 traffic should proceed to Industrial Boulevard to access southbound I-880.
