FREE EARTH DAY FAIR & RECYCLE CELEBRATION, SATURDAY APRIL 18th 10-4 IN NEWARK

This Saturday marks the first official Newark Earth Day event at the Tri Cities Earth Day Fair - at Swiss Park from 10 am to 4 pm

On April 18th, 2015, several hundred people are expected to commemorate Earth Day for the first time here in Newark. The Tri-Cities Earth Day Fair, will be held in the parking lot at Swiss Park, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., and offer free fun, games, prizes, demonstrations, entertainment and more, along with Fair and post-Fair recycle collection services for eWaste, glass, plastic, clothing, and shoes. The event and project organizers were recognized for outstanding service on Thursday, April 9th, at the Newark City Council meeting.

Special in its own right for being Newark’s first Earth Day event, this Fair has even more significance for the community than the obvious recycle and information benefits. It is the product of more than 50 exceptional local youth from NMHS Interact, UNICEF and CSF, who have volunteered their skills, their time, and their considerable energy over the last two months, planning and creating Newark’s first green-event.

They’ve  put together some 30 event games, activities, vendor tables, demonstrations and more. When we told Stopwaste.org about these “kids,” and the work they were doing to bring Earth Day to Newark, they quickly awarded a $5,000 grant to support this, and other awareness measures over the next year.

Ultimately, about 100 youth volunteers will have participated in executing this event. These young people and the youth groups they serve, have worked hard, rallied many businesses, organizations and individuals, and created something important, not only to the future of Newark as a City affected by climate change, but to our future on this planet. In the few short weeks since we began, they’ve performed with initiative, creativity and outstanding commitment to this community project.

At a time when we’re looking for new, emerging leaders, the young men and women of these organizations, and others, have stepped into the role with competence and enthusiasm for changing our world. Hopefully, everyone in the community will come out to the event to show their support for Earth Day, but more importantly – to thank the young people selflessly working to save our community and our planet.
