NEWARK, CA — The Newark Police Department will conduct a DUI Checkpoint from 6 p.m. on Thursday to 2 a.m. on Friday. The exact location of the checkpoint will not be announced in advance.
The location was chosen based on data of impaired driving-related crashes.
According tot he department, the purpose of the checkpoint is to promote public safety by taking suspected impaired drivers off the road.

"Impaired drivers put others on the road at significant risk," Lt. Sal Sandoval said in a message to the community. "Any prevention measures that reduce the number of impaired drivers on our roads significantly improves traffic safety."
Some prescription medications and over-the-counter drugs may interfere with driving and also are considered driving under the influence.

The checkpoint is being paid for by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
