Newark Police Advising Public About Recent Home Repair Scam

Police are advising residents to be aware of a possible home repair scam that recently surfaced in Newark. A person recently called a Newark resident claiming to be with a furnace repair company that had serviced the homeowner’s furnace in the past. The resident agreed to have the caller come out to service and tune up the furnace for $49.95.

Upon arrival, the service technician immediately told the homeowner that his home’s entire duct work needed replacing, leading the homeowner to ask for the company’s name and references. After the technician provided the homeowner with a website to visit, the homeowner discovered that people had fallen victim to a scam very similar to what was trying to be perpetrated.

Once the homeowner told the technician of his findings, the technician quickly left the residence. Newark police advise that scam artists often carry fake credentials and appear legitimate.
