Newark Police Arrest Pair In Commercial Burglary Probe

Police believe the pair is responsible for more than a dozen commercial burglaries.

NEARK, CA — Police in Newark arrested two suspects recently in connection with more than a dozen commercial burglaries.

Christian Villegas Alvarez, 26, of Newark, was arrested on suspicion of 13 commercial burglaries, conspiracy to commit a crime and receiving stolen property, and Lyla Alcorta, 20, of Newark, was arrested on suspicion of commercial burglary and conspiracy to commit a crime, according to the Newark Police Department.

Villegas Alvarez was out on bail on charges for 22 previous commercial burglaries, police said.
The Newark Police Department has been investigating a series of commercial burglaries that had occurred in the last several months.

The burglaries had occurred in Newark and in neighboring cities, and in most cases, consisted of a suspect smashing out a front glass door and stealing money or entire cash registers from the businesses.

On June 21 at 9:30 a.m., detectives from the Newark Police Department and neighboring law enforcement agencies served a warrant at a residence in the 37000 block of Cherry Street, and the two suspects were taken into custody.
