After several recent crashes, the Newark Police Department is cracking down on drivers who fail to yield to pedestrians in crosswalks. Monday morning they conducted a Pedestrian Traffic Safety Operation. non-uniformed members of the Newark Police Department crossed streets in marked pedestrian crosswalks while officers monitored drivers' compliance. The result: 68 citations and 23 verbal warnings. There were also 7 unlicensed drivers caught during the operation. Officers spoke to all of the drivers about pedestrian right-of-way laws and other associated traffic laws.
