NMHS first Fine Arts Fair on Sat. May 2, 2015 from 5 pm to 9 pm
Fine Arts Fair showcases works from students and fun activities. Come by and support the artistic creativity by NMHS.
As part of Superintendent Marken’s objective of making NUSD a destination, the NMHS Fine Arts Department is planning its first Fine Arts Fair, showcasing work from all the visual and performing arts classes and clubs. It will provide the community with an opportunity to see the high level of artistic creativity achieved by NMHS, interact with the students as they describe their works, and support the artists and the program through purchasing artwork and making donations for specific items.
Some of the planned activities include: Performances by the Choirs and Band, Drama students, Improv Club, and Poetry Slam, Videos by MCA Media Arts, Displays from Visual Arts classes, Photography, MCA Commercial Art, Murals, Drawing and Painting, Ceramics, Interactive booths for children: designing buttons, face painting by students, Judging of art pieces by an artist or art teacher in the community, and awarding of prizes, Fundraising opportunities: purchase of student artwork and the official Fine Arts Fair T-Shirt, an “ Adoption” Table (for broken equipment and instruments), a raffle (sponsored by the Newark Music Boosters), and food booths.
Staffing for the event will be provided by parents and students, giving an opportunity for parents to connect with the school and an opportunity for students to earn community service hours.
Cost for the event should be minimal, however, we need items to set up displays, lighting for outside eating areas, supplies for interactive booths, and other supplies that we will discover as we continue planning. We will be soliciting donations and/or sponsorships from local art and music retailers, and from parents through their places of work. If they see that NMHS has a vital Fine Arts Department, we may be able to get them involved in future projects for the classes.
By showcasing the end products in high school at this Fair, hopefully we will be building excitement and passion for these endeavors in students from kindergarten through 12th grade, leading to well-rounded graduates from NUSD.
If you would like to help out in any way, be it your time for setting up, being a watchful eye during the Fair, contacting possible donors, etc., please contact Joanne Hong, NMHS Fine Arts Department Chair, at jhong@newarkunified.org.
