Suspect Arrested After I-880 Police Pursuit Has Long Rap Sheet

Police say the stolen car crashed into two vehicles stopped at Alvarado-Niles and Decoto roads.

UNION CITY, CA — A suspect who allegedly was involved in a stolen car incident and vehicle chase in Union City on Monday was identified by police today as John Van Hoang, a 38-year-old transient.

Union City police Sgt. Steve Mendez said that at about 11:50 a.m. on Monday officers received a report of a pursuit on Interstate Highway 880 involving the California Highway Patrol and a person in a stolen vehicle.

When the pursuit continued onto city streets, the suspect driver then crashed into two other vehicles that were stopped at a red light at the intersection of Alvarado-Niles and Decoto roads, Mendez said.

One person inside the suspect vehicle, Van Hoang, was arrested but another person in the vehicle, the suspected driver, fled and still hasn't been located, according to Mendez.

Occupants in the other involved vehicles suffered minor injuries but weren't taken to a hospital, Mendez said.

Van Hoang was arrested on suspicion of possession of a stolen vehicle, resisting arrest, misappropriation of lost property and violating his probation, according to Mendez.

Court records indicate that Van Hoang was previously arrested for unlawfully driving or taking a vehicle, theft by fraudulent access card and attempted second-degree burglary.

Alameda County District Attorney officials weren't immediately available for comment on whether Van Hoang has been charged or when he'll appear in court.
