Suspected Mail Thief Arrested in Newark

Good police instincts led to the arrest.

NEWARK, CA — A suspected Newark mail thief is under arrest, and residents have the good instincts of a Newark Police Officer to thank.

The arrest happened last week, after Officer Matt Warren noticed a male riding his bike on Central Avenue while carrying a package under his arm. He was coming from a residential area where several package thefts had been reported.

Officer Warren tried to stop him, but he fled on Central Avenue, tossing the package off an overpass above I-880.

After a short chase, Officer Warren captured the suspect on Farwell Drive.

The package was recovered from the freeway and was confirmed to have been stolen from a resident's front porch.

The package was returned to it's rightful owner.
