A nine-day investigation by Newport Beach investigators concluded the green kayak indeed belonged to Cross, according to city officials. The kayak was located the same day Cross went missing, reportedly by an off-duty sheriff's deputy, but the family was not able to immediately identify it. <a href="https://patch.com/A-kRDF" rel="noopener" target="_blank">The U.S. Coast Guard called off its 52-hour search</a> on Aug. 7. Cross was not wearing a life jacket when he told his family he was going kayaking for a few hours. — City News Service
