Air Mattress Surfer Nails Nightmare-Sized Surf At Newport's Wedge

The waves were huge, but this Newport Beach area surfer has a backup plan in case of a wipeout. Air mattress surfing does have its benefits.

NEWPORT BEACH, CA — On a day when California proclaimed surfing the sport of the state, we couldn't let this one slide by. A Newport Beach resident was recently seen taking on the massive surf on his air mattress.

Wait, what?

It's true. Newport Beach visitors are used to seeing skimboarders, body surfers and traditional surfers riding the waves, but one area resident has lately been attacking the famed dramatic surf at the Wedge on an inflatable air mattress. Quinn Kasbar can often be seen around the Wedge taking on the surf with his trusty air mattress.

At one point in the video, Kasbar actually appears to catch some air, as well as the wave. Somehow, that big inflatable bed just floats like a "magic carpet" while onlookers can be seen cheering.

Kasbar was attacked post video by another Instagrammer who proclaimed he had "littered the beach" with the mattress, though this was not proven true and the post was removed from Instagram. When asked by Patch, Kasbar declined to comment on the incident.

But is this really mat surfing? Air mattress surfing, while appearing odd is actually kind of a thing, just not typically with a queen or full-sized mat.

The mat used in "mat surfing" is more boogie board-sized, and a little easier to maneuver and from what mat rider Daniel Thomson says, a whole lot of fun.

Below, see how to mat surf.
