1 Killed, Coast Highway Shut Down In OC Crash: Police

A person was killed Wednesday afternoon in a major traffic crash that shut down a stretch of Pacific Coast Highway in Newport Beach.

NEWPORT BEACH, CA — A stretch of Coast Highway was closed to traffic after a fatal crash killed one person in Newport Beach, police said.

The crash happened at around 12:46 p.m. near Pelican Point and Coast Highway, according to the Newport Beach Police Department.

The crash shut down all southbound lanes of East Coast Highway at Pelican Point and all northbound lanes at Newport Coast Drive.

A preliminary investigation determined that the vehicle collided with the pedestrian in the westbound lanes of Coast Highway, west of the intersection.

Police said several bystanders immediately began to render life-saving measures to the pedestrian until emergency personnel arrived at the location.

Despite those efforts, the pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene by Newport Beach Fire Department personnel.

The victim's name was not immediately released by police.

Detectives assigned to the Major Accident Investigation Team responded to the area and have assumed the investigation.

Motorists were urged to avoid the area.
