NEWPORT BEACH, CA — Two young women recently learned two hard lessons: one regarding going to bars with a fake ID, and the other involving geography.
The Newport Beach Police Department shared body camera footage on social media of an arrest on June 20 outside Mutt Lynch's, a pub located on West Oceanfront.
The video shows an officer questioning two college-aged women about the identification cards they were carrying.
The exchange played out like this:
Officer: Where are you from?
Woman: Washington.
Officer: Where do you go to school?
Woman: I go to Illinois State.
Officer: But you live in Massachusetts?
Woman: Yeah, my family is there.
Officer: Where's your Illinois ID if you go to school there?
Woman: That's Washington (the woman then points to the ID card).
Officer: This says Massachusetts.
Woman: Well, isn't that in Washington?
The video was a part of the city's "Not in Newport" campaign aimed at cracking down on underage drinking and DUIs from spring break through the summer, according to police.
According to the video, one of the women admitted to being 20-years-old.
The video then cuts to the woman and her friend sitting on the curb as she admits to attending USC, not Illinois State.
"Dude, I'm smarter than Illinois," she tells the officer.
The woman was arrested for carrying the fake ID, according to the Newport Beach Police Department.
In California, getting caught with a fake ID carries a minimum $250 fine, at least 24 hours of community service, potentially up to a year in jail and a possible one-year driver's license suspension.
The video was posted Wednesday morning to the NBPD's Instagram, but removed a few hours later. It was not immediately clear why the video was taken down.
