📰 News we're reading

• Judge rules Newport Beach must place 3 resident initiatives on the 2026 ballot (ocregister.com) — A Superior Court judge has ordered Newport Beach to place three resident-backed initiatives on the November 2026 ballot, overruling the City Council's plan to delay them until 2028. The measures would give voters more say over council meetings, term limits, and how council members are elected, and now city officials must quickly work with the county to meet election deadlines.

• Super El Niño could push venomous yellow-bellied sea snakes into Southern California surf (thecooldown.com) — Newport Beach gets a notable mention as one of only a handful of Southern California beaches where a highly venomous yellow‑bellied sea snake has ever been recorded, during a past El Niño. With another Super El Niño looming, scientists warn warmer waters could again push rare tropical species, including these snakes, toward local surf, urging beachgoers to report unusual sightings and keep a safe distance.

• How They Pulled It Off: Recreating a Midcentury-Modern Beach House From the Ground Up (dwell.com) — A Newport Beach family rebuilt a deteriorating 1940s Balboa Peninsula beach house into a 3,200-square-foot midcentury-inspired rental that still nods to the original cottage. Designer Lindsay Olson blended vintage finds, bold colors, and preserved details like green paneling and terrazzo to create a low-maintenance, highly personal retreat just eight houses from the sand.
