• Newport Beach Maritime Smuggling — 14 Arrested in Bold Sea Operation (koreadaily.com) — Federal agents intercepted a suspected smuggling boat off Newport Beach's coast on the 3rd, detaining 14 people and seizing the vessel. With similar incidents near Newport Harbor last month, the city is now pursuing 24-hour surveillance cameras at the harbor entrance to better monitor boat traffic and respond faster to suspicious activity.

• Kelvin wave hitting Southern California: What to expect as El Niño threatens the coast again (latimes.com subscription) — Newport Beach is already seeing significant beach erosion as an unusually strong El Niño and a powerful Kelvin wave push sea levels higher along the Southern California coast, raising the risk of flooding and damage this fall and winter. Scientists warn that multiple incoming Kelvin waves, king tides, and strong storms could combine to produce sea levels rivaling the worst events of 1982-83 and 1997-98, urging coastal communities to prepare now.

• Anushka Sen's 'Jeju Olle' to Make US Premiere at Newport Beach (indiawest.com) — Newport Beach residents can catch the North American premiere of the Korea-India film "Jeju Olle" at the 27th Newport Beach Film Festival on October 21 at Regal Edwards Big Newport. Star Anushka Sen says she's thrilled to represent India as the movie blends Korean and Indian music, language, and romance in a healing story set on Jeju Island.
