Today's riddle: Why do some birds fly south for the winter? 🤔 (Answer below!)
1. StyleWeek OC to serve looks, partner with the film fest at Fashion Island in Newport Beach (latimes.com subscription) — StyleWeekOC is bringing five days of fashion, beauty events, and film tie-ins to Fashion Island in Newport Beach from Oct. 14-18, with many happenings free or open to the public. From runway shows and beauty counter-hopping to cocktail classes benefiting CASA OC and film screenings, locals can plan specific times and locations to join the festivities close to home.
2. Long Beach Homeowners Heartbroken as Tropical Storm Rachel Annihilates Houses (pulptastic.com) — Newport Beach has declared a local emergency after coastal flooding swamped Balboa Peninsula streets, closing local beaches plus the Newport Pier, Balboa Pier and the Wedge while crews build sand berms and deploy pumps. As Long Beach homeowners describe unprecedented destruction from Tropical Storm Rachel, Newport Beach and Orange County workers are racing to reinforce shorelines and distribute sandbags ahead of dangerous king tides and more surf.
3. Southern California Coastal Flood Advisory — Newport Beach and Long Beach Closures (koreadaily.com) — Newport Beach residents are under a coastal flood advisory through tomorrow afternoon, with access to the Newport and Balboa piers and some beaches still restricted after high tides and flooding on the 11th. While waters have receded on local roads, continued high surf and tides from weakening tropical cyclone Rachel mean low-lying coastal areas should stay alert for renewed flooding risks.
4. Flood damaged EVs pose fire risk even after water recedes, fire officials say (ktla.com) — After coastal flooding from post-Tropical Storm Rachel in places including Newport Beach, fire officials are warning that EVs, hybrids, e-bikes and scooters exposed to saltwater can catch fire days or weeks later. Newport Beach–area residents are urged not to drive or charge any possibly flooded vehicles, to call insurance and a qualified mechanic, and to dial 911 if they see smoke, odd noises, or heat.
5. Tropical Storm Rachel downgraded as high winds and rain turn inward (opb.org) — Homes in Newport Beach were among those partially submerged as heavy surf from now post-tropical Storm Rachel breached sand berms along the Southern California coast. The storm is moving inland, but high surf, flooding risks and an expected strong El Niño mean Newport Beach residents should prepare for more intense rain, waves and erosion through the coming winter months.
