Anglers Haul in Sharks off Newport

Also, croaker are biting in Back Bay.

The Freelance's 3/4-day trip to local hot spots on Tuesday turned up two sharks, along with barracuda and calico bass. Thomas Sterner at told me that one angler pulled in a six-foot leopard shark and a 40-pound mako shark. Moss said the fisherman was using live bait.

Vick Sommer set a record last weekend with his 56 ½-pound white sea bass caught on 12 pound test line. Sommer was using sardines as bait. He battled the fish for more thasn 30 minutes.

Three anglers aboard Bongos III out of Davey’s Locker took a 3/4-day charter to Catalina Island and landed three white sea bass and 60 calicos.

The Western Pride is running extended 1/2-day trips from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. targeting bass and barracuda. A recent trip to the Newport reef and local kelp netted 96 calico bass, 10 sand bass, three rockfish and two sheephead.

boats, the Nautilus and Patriot, have been running local trips fishing for calico bass, sand bass and barracuda using frozen squid and anchovies.

On Tuesday, 101 Newport Landing anglers on 3 trips caught 92 calico bass, 126 sand bass, 16 barracuda, seven rockfish, six sheep head, one cabazon.

Jeff Overall at Newport Harbor Kayak Fishing has been fishing the Back Bay daily and reports a lot of good action on any tidal movement for anglers using kayaks and light gear. Overall said, “the croaker are hitting almost anything.” And he said spotted bay bass are biting before the cloud cover burns off and the croaker bite later in the day. Overall prefers 3-inch minnows as bait.
