Bike Thefts are on the Rise in Newport Beach

The number of bike thefts reported in Newport Beach amounts to just about one per day, according to reports. Lock it up, says the NBPD!

NEWPORT BEACH, CA — Bike thefts in Newport Beach are on the rise according to the Newport Beach Police Department in a recent press release.

"Since August 1, there have been 27 bike thefts reported. Out of the 27 bikes stolen, seven were taken from open or unsecured garages," the release said. "While most of the bikes had been left unsecured, a few of the bikes were locked, but the suspect was able to easily cut the lock and take the bike."

The areas with the most bike thefts reported is just northwest of the Newport Center.

So how do you prevent bike theft in your community? Here are a few tips courtesy of the Newport Beach Police Department.

Prevent Bike Theft With these Simple Tips:

  • When possible, secure your bike to a fixed object in a LOCKED garage or storage area.
  • When you take your bike out, to the beach, shopping or to go to dinner, always lock it. If possible, also park your bike where you can see it.
  • Use a hardened steel U-lock or hardened steel chain and padlock to secure your bike to a fixed object. When using a U-lock, position the lock so that the keyhole faces down towards the ground.
  • License your bike with the City of Newport Beach at any Fire Station or the Police Department during normal business hours. The cost is $2
  • If your bike is stolen, report the theft to police as soon as possible by calling 949-644-3717 or make a police report online at: www.nbpd.org
