NEWPORT BEACH, CA — A small brush fire broke out near a school in Newport Beach Thursday, but firefighters had it swiftly handled, authorities say. The Eastbluff Elementary School students were told to stay indoors due to smoke, Jennifer Manzella of the Newport Beach Police Department said. Firefighters remained on scene to mop up the hotspots and ensure the fire was fully doused.

"Nearly 40 firefighters responded quickly and attacked the fire that was approximately 1 acre in size, holding the fire to the area of origin, a Newport Beach Fire Department spokesperson said. No structures were damaged.

The one-acre fire started for unknown reasons just before 1:45 p.m. at Vista Grande near Vista del Oro, according to Manzella.
