Chapman Settles Lawsuit with CDM Man Claiming $12 Million Donation Was Elder Abuse

Chapman University and a 98-year-old philanthropist have settled a lawsuit over a $12 million gift he wanted to take back, alleging the university took advantage of his age, the university announced today.

James and Catherine Emmi filed a lawsuit in Orange County Superior Court Feb. 9 alleging that Chapman University President James Doti pressured James Emmi to agree to the gift without his wife’s consent.

The terms of the settlement will not be released, according to Chapman spokeswoman Mary Platt.

The university issued the following statement:

“James and Catherine Emmi and Chapman University today announced a restructuring of previously donated funds toward a new scholarship program for outstanding students studying science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) at Chapman University.

“The new fund will support ‘James and Catherine Emmi Scholars.’ Highly qualified students will be able to apply for scholarship consideration and use that financial support to pursue more their studies at Chapman University.”

Doti added, “Our intent with every donor is to help them achieve their personal legacy objectives. After learning of Mr. and Mrs. Emmi’s goals, we worked to address their desire to direct their gift into an endowed scholarship fund.

“We anticipate the Emmi Scholars will become extraordinary leaders and contributors in their future careers. I am pleased that Chapman University is able to honor the legacy of Jim and Catherine Emmi by educating well-prepared students who will make our community and our world a better place.”
