Corona Del Mar High School recently announced it is hiring an ethics consultant in the wake of a series of scandals having occurred at the school. Most recently, there was cheating on a mass scale that included a teacher. One doesn't have to look too far back to see a massive ethics issue with the past superintendent of the district. Corona Del Mar High School is part of the Newport-Mesa School District.
I question the efficacy of an “ethics consultant” providing a program during an assembly or similar event. Being an ethical person is a lifestyle that begins at a young age. Otherwise, being ethical is more a matter of being keenly aware of the consequences of certain actions. A better term for the person hired by the district could be, “consequence consultant”.
My staff was recently provided training conducted by yours truly on ethics. I could have called it, “don’t be an idiot” or “I don’t want to fire you but…”. It was definitely a program on consequences.

I could ramble on about the win at all costs culture that permeates society. Our teens are more likely to know each episode of “Mad Men” than who wrote the Book of Proverbs. By the way, Proverbs is probably the best book on leadership and ethics I could recommend to any of these students. But of course, it is banned reading in our public schools. This may say more about the state of current affairs than anything else.
Hopefully, parents will introduce the kids to King Solomon and turn them away from Kim Khardashian.
