Coroner IDs Newport Beach Pier Homicide Victim

A transient was identified Monday, officials say. One person was arrested in the fatal incident.

NEWPORT BEACH, CA —The identity of a man killed in Newport Beach early Saturday was released by authorities, Monday.

The victim was identified as 59-year-old Ruben Gonzalez, who was a transient, said Orange County sheriff's Sgt. Todd Hylton.

Minutes after midnight Saturday, Newport Beach police were called to the scene where the victim was found unconscious near Newport Pier, according to police. Gonzalez was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said Gonzalez got into some sort of an altercation with a suspect, who was arrested, but police have not released his identity. The suspect was arrested in the area and there was no ongoing threat to the area, according to authorities.

The suspect's name is not currently known, and police have not released any other details as of this report.
