Diary of a Sailor: Experiencing a Tennis-Filled Week, From the Sidelines
Newport Harbor freshman tennis player Kate Knight shares her journal entry for the week ending March 22.

Hey Everybody,
As I had hoped, this week was a total blast. On Wednesday I skipped school to go out to watch a professional tennis tournament (BNP Paribas). It was so much fun and I got to sit in the front row of every match and watch the best players in the world. It was so cool just being a few feet away from some of my favorite players and the quality of tennis was amazing. The tournament was down in Palm Desert and the weather there was absolutely perfect! Overall, the tournament was such a great time and I encourage any tennis fans to go and watch next year.
Also in tennis news, this weekend was the high school boys’ tennis All-American tournament, hosted by Corona del Mar. This tournament showcases the top boys’ tennis teams from throughout the entire country and many local players scored big. The finals on Saturday included the top two seeds, Menlo HS (Northern Cal.) and University HS, which is located in Irvine. These two teams battled schools from all over the country to reach the finals and it was University that came out with the championship. Commonly ranked as the best tennis team in the nation, University’s infinite number of incredibly strong players led the Trojans to dominate Menlo (the past champs), 7-1. It was really fun to watch the boys compete and the level of tennis at the tournament was also astounding.
