Diary of a Sailor: Fast Start to Spring Break Begins With SLO Tennis

Newport Harbor High tennis player Kate Knight shares her journal entry for the week ending April 12.

Hello Everyone,

I’ve had an exciting past week and will hopefully have a relaxing week to come. Spring break is finally here and it feels so good to be stress free.

Last weekend, I won my very first 16s age-division tennis match and am super excited to continue the streak and build up my ranking in a higher division. Currently I am in San Luis Obispo playing in another tennis tournament. It is so beautiful in this area; everything is so wide open and the weather is perfect. With a tough loss yesterday I am now playing today in the consolation. This means that I am playing in the back draw and will have a smaller set format. Surprisingly, though, I’m excited to play and can’t wait to get on the court.

It’s so much fun being able to travel around to play in these different tournaments and events. The road trips around Southern California and the plane rides with my family are a great time and I feel so privileged to be able to travel around the country, doing what I love. I’m also very glad that it is spring break.

I’ve been so overstressed from school and homework and now it is finally time to relax. Being up north and staying at a hotel really kicked in the idea that I’m on vacation and I plan to make the most of every second of it. Already enjoying sleeping in everyday as well as swimming and other activities, I feel so refreshed.

Unfortunately, reality will soon kick back in when I return home to my load of spring-break homework. Well, I’m now off to play my matches and enjoy what I have left of my tennis get-away. Wishing everybody a fantastic week!

Kate
