Diary of a Sailor: Hot Tennis Being Served Up in Palm Desert

Newport Harbor High tennis player Kara Knight shares her journal for the week ending March 15.

Hi everybody,

This past week seemed to last forever and I’m super excited to kick things back into gear and have a great week to come. First, this week there is a professional tennis tournament (BNP Paribas) going on in Palm Desert and I have tickets to go for the quarterfinals on Wednesday. It’s going to be so much fun and we picked such a perfect day to go. I went with my mom and a friend a couple years ago, but back then I wasn’t really that involved with what was going on and missed out on watching the tennis. I’m so grateful to get to go again this year and watch the best players in the world battle it out.

Next, also coming up soon this spring is the Adoption Guild charity’s annual tennis tournament. My mom is the president of a local charity and every year I get to help out with the silent auction they host at the tournament. It’s really amazing to be able to mix together charity with my love for tennis, and last year the auction alone raised more than $30,000 for adoptive children in Southern California. It’s really special to be a part of such a huge team of people working and sacrificing their time for a greater cause.

As most of you know, I am a student at Newport Harbor High and am also a member of the school's girls tennis team. Right now, the boys are in-season and are off to a rough start, so any Sailor fans who want to support the team should check out the schedule for their next match and come cheer them on!

Lastly, I’m so excited for the fun times I’m going to have this week and want to give a quick shout-out to my parents to thank them for being there for me every second of every day. I love you guys and am blessed to have you in my life.
