Domestic Violence Suspect Surrenders To Costa Mesa Cops Wednesday

A father—believed to be armed—surrendered after 10 hours barricaded inside his home with his two children, Wednesday.

COSA MESA, CA —A Costa Mesa father and domestic violence suspect was in a lengthy barricade, Wednesday, after his wife escaped and alerted authorities, police say. A crisis-negotiation team, in communication with the suspect, says he surrendered peacefully just before 10:30 a.m.

Police said the two children were recovered "safe and sound."

Their ages were not released.

Nearby homes were evacuated after midnight when the Costa Mesa father barricaded himself and his family inside their Dakota Avenue home, police say. Costa Mesa police reported that just after midnight a mother— and assault victim—escaped her home early Wednesday morning on the 3200 block of Dakota Avenue, near Gisler Avenue.

Her two children remained inside the home, while their father barricaded from police. He was believed to be armed.

"Nearby homes were evacuated and SWAT and K-9 units took positions around the residence," Costa Mesa Police reported.

"The Crisis Negotiation Team is communicating with the suspect, and worked to get him to exit the residence peacefully," according to Roxi Fyad, public affairs manager of the Costa Mesa Police Department

The schools of California Elementary School and TeWinkle Middle School were nearby and were alerted of the incident. No schools were locked down according to the Newport Mesa Unified School District.
