Driver Submerged In OC Wetlands ID'd As 29-Year-Old Costa Mesa Woman

The woman was hospitalized after her vehicle became submerged in the wetlands off of Pacific Coast Highway in Huntington Beach.

COSTA MESA, CA — A woman who was hospitalized last month after being hospitalized from a solo crash in Huntington Beach died Friday from her injuries.

The woman, identified as 29-year-old Breanna Calderon, suffered injuries late November after her vehicle became submerged in the wetlands off of Pacific Coast Highway in Huntington Beach.

"It is with great sadness and heavy heart to write this update. My sister has passed away on December 1st at approximately 12:30pm," family members wrote on GoFundMe. "She passed away peacefully with her family present. Thank you to everyone for your support and continued support."

The crash happened at around 11 p.m. Nov. 20, when a gray 2019 Toyota RAV4 allegedly lost control south of Warner Avenue and veered off of the highway and into the waters bordering the roadway, Huntington Beach police said Monday.

Calderon was rescued from her vehicle after a 10 minute effort, family members said. She was moved to UC Irvine Medical Center and admitted into the intensive care unit with a traumatic brain injury after being submerged in the water for 10 to 15 minutes, the GoFundMe page said.

She died at the hospital at around 12:30 p.m. on Friday while surrounded by her family, the page said.

The investigation into the cause of the crash is currently ongoing. Residents who witnessed the crash or the events leading up to it are encouraged to contact HBPD Traffic Investigator Vishal Rattanchandani at (714) 536-5231.
