First Day Of School For Newport Mesa Kids

Summer is over, and school is here. Parents, the Newport Beach Police Department shared tips on staying safe during pick-up and drop off!

NEWPORT BEACH, CA — The backpacks were packed, lunches made and notes from mom tucked in for safe keeping. Across Newport Beach, Corona Del Mar and Costa Mesa parents once again braved the school drop off and pickup, and new school parents leaped in to that steep learning curve of new traffic patterns.

Newport Beach Police Officers were out in force to ensure safety for all on this, the first day of the new school year.

"While our students and their teachers are focused on learning new subjects, the Newport Beach Police Department will be doing everything we can to keep kids safe during their journeys to and from school," Newport Beach Police Spokesperson Jennifer Manzella told us. But she had a plea this and every week of the school year.

"We ask that every driver, bicyclist and pedestrian do their part to keep our school zones safe," she said.

Whether its taking a moment in the morning to remind your children about responsible bike riding, or being extra observant when driving around town, you can do your part to make sure that everyone gets to school safely, she said.

The Newport Beach Police Department officers and staff will be on patrol around schools during the days, weeks, and months to come, Manzella told us.

"They will be enforcing traffic and parking laws and doing their best to educate kids about safety," she said. "If everyone does their part by being patient and responsible road users, we can make this school year the safest one yet!"

Stay off your phones while driving and moving through crosswalks, except to take photos of your backpack toting littles!

Happy back to school!
