Got Noise? John Wayne Airport Has A Solution For Noise Management
Airplane noise is something that plagues residents of Orange County and now John Wayne Airport is attempting to help streamline complaints.
SANTA ANA, CA — On Wednesday, John Wayne Airport announced Viewpoint, a new user-friendly platform for community members to submit noise events.
Located in the center of Orange County, the airport is one of the busiest and most noise-sensitive airports in the United States. Suburban homes surround the bustling complex that sits north of Newport Beach, west of Irvine, east of Costa Mesa, and south of Tustin and Santa Ana. Currently, the airport employs ten permanent noise monitoring stations, and implements noise limits on in and outbound jets.
Still, Viewpoint was released to both improve community relations and listen to the public.

According to a John Wayne Airport spokesperson, the new Viewpoint system will help to compile better information on how to uphold the stringent noise rules the airport must follow.
According to a spokesperson for the airport, the Viewpoint systemfully integrates with the Airport's Noise and Operations Management System (ANOMS).

"This streamlined system automatically submits noise event information to the Access and Noise Office, improving consistency and facilitating more efficient data collection," they said.
The Viewpoint portal allows users to submit questions or concerns about a noise event directly from their mobile device or computer. Before using, residents must create a personal profile, which will store every submission.
There is also an interactive telephone voice response system, including voice to text transcription.

Community members can also utilize the VOLANS flight track viewer, to view aircraft data such as origin/destination, altitude, aircraft type, heading, and flight number.
"VOLANS allows users to view flights in near real-time, or to playback historical data," they said.
The airport reviews noise violations with a "three strikes" rule on inbound or outbound aircraft. If three violations are incurred in the span of three years, the airport reserves the right to deny usage of the airport to that plane/pilot.
