NEWPORT BEACH, CA — Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian announced Tuesday that it is the recipient of the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association’s Get With The Guidelines® Heart Failure and Stroke Gold Plus Quality Achievement Awards.

The awards highlight Hoag’s commitment to ensuring patients with heart failure and stroke receive the most appropriate treatment according to nationally recognized, research-based guidelines founded on the latest scientific evidence.

This is the first year Hoag has received the Gold Plus award for heart failure care, which is awarded to hospitals that meet advanced levels of achievement for 24 consecutive months or more and achieve 75 percent or higher compliance with four or more Get With The Guidelines Heart Failure Quality Measures.

“Delivering the highest quality of care to our patients with heart failure is our top priority,” said Dipti Itchhaporia, M.D., program director, Hoag Congestive Heart Failure Program and the Robert & Georgia Roth Endowed Chair for Excellence in Cardiac Care. “It’s an honor for Hoag to be recognized with this national distinction for the pioneering techniques and exceptional patient outcomes that our cardiovascular team is delivering.”

For stroke care, this is the eighth consecutive year that Pickup Family Neurosciences Institute’s Stroke Program has received the Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award and the second year being recognized as a Target: Stroke Honor Roll Elite, acknowledging Hoag’s role in reducing the time between the patient’s arrival at the hospital and treatment with the clot-buster tissue plasminogen activator, or tPA, the only drug approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to treat ischemic stroke. When given intravenously in the first three hours after the start of stroke symptoms, tPA has been shown to significantly reduce the effects of stroke and lessen the chance of permanent disability.

"This award demonstrates our commitment to delivering advanced stroke treatments to patients quickly and safely,” said David M. Brown, M.D., program director Hoag Stroke Program, Pickup Family Neurosciences Institute. “Hoag Stroke Program’s multidisciplinary team utilizes state-of-the-art technology and proven specialized neurological techniques to provide and document the best outcomes for our patients.”

The Pickup Family Neurosciences Institute’s Stroke Program at Hoag Hospital in Newport Beach is certified as a Comprehensive Stroke Center by DNV GL Healthcare USA, Inc. and Hoag Hospital Irvine is certified as a Primary Stroke Receiving Center, affirming Hoag’s readiness to handle a full range of stroke-related medical problems.
