Throwing Stars, Bullets Found in Luggage at John Wayne Airport

Travel tip: When packing your carry-on for a flight, make sure your toiletries are in a quart-size resealable bag. And remember, no liquids, gels or aerosols in containers larger than 3 ounces.

Oh yeah ... and leave the throwing stars and ammunition at home.

Three passengers departing from John Wayne Airport recently could have used a refresher on that last piece of advice.

On Friday, airport security officials at a checkpoint found martial arts throwing stars in a passenger's carry-on bag, Transportation Safety Administration spokesman Nico Melendez said. Later that day, officials found .22 caliber ammunition in another passenger's bag, he said. On Sunday, officials discovered that yet another passenger had a throwing star in a carry-on bag, Melendez said.

"I've never seen this many illegal items in this short a period of time," he said.

The items were confiscated and the incidents were reported to local authorities, who have the final say on whether the passengers will face criminal consequences, Melendez said.
