JWA Security Measures Remain Vigilant Following Fatal Shooting at Fort Lauderdale Airport

NEWPORT BEACH, CA — Security at John Wayne Airport is ever vigilant with security measures, aware of the shooter scenario that occurred at the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport in Florida.

"JWA and Orange County Sheriff's Department Airport Police Services are stressing that high vigilance be exercised by their officers and staff," Customer Relations Manager Rachel Gibson said. "We are not aware of any local threats as a result of the Florida incident."

The airport will continue monitoring the Florida event "and adjust security posture should that become necessary," Gibson said.

Meanwhile, the Los Angeles Airport Police are "deploying additional resources" at Los Angeles International Airport on Friday following the fatal shooting at the airport in Florida.

Multiple people were killed by a lone gunman in at the Fort Lauderdale, Florida, international airport, Broward County Sheriff's Office said. The suspect is in custody, according to a tweet from the sheriff's office.

The shooting happened just a little before 1 p.m. local time, according to the sheriff's office. At least six people were shot, according to broadcast reports in Miami.

Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport officials announced that "all services are temporarily suspended at the airport."

Former White House spokesman Ari Fleischer was in the airport when the shooting happened and tweeted that "everyone is running."

At LAX, Airport Police said it has increased police presence in the Central Terminal area as well as adding more resources to other terminals.

"Airport Police are monitoring the situation in Florida closely," the agency tweeted.

Five scheduled flights that had not yet departed from Fort Lauderdale to LAX were listed as delayed on the LAX flight status website. Fort Lauderdale- bound flights from LAX were all still listed as being "on time," but passengers were being advised to check with airlines about flight status.
